It is the Radio Data System. I know it from Europe. It gives you station information, song names, artist and "Yes" commercials on your radio display. Similar to what you might get from a satelite radio. The only thing is they had it 15, 20 years ago.

we have it here in So Cal too... only some stations... and not at all times either... weird.

Yeah, just since about a year ago, they started broadcasting RDS in Northern California, too. Not all stations have it. Like I said, it is pretty old technology, but I figure radio stations have to invest in the equipment now to compete with satelite radio. Before they never had to.

I love competition!

I've noticed that after tuning in to a station the name of the station shows up like "630CHED"

It also provides all the frequencys of the station you are listening to (you can't see them though, but your radio reads them). So when you drive, it automatically switches to the frequency with the best signal of this station.

The radio station can display whatever they want. Song and artist, weather and news, station name, greetings...
