Wrong sir! =-p

Rev comes from the word Revolution as in REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE or...... RPM. It is a slang term.

Raving means: "You're a raving lunatic" or "My mother cannot stop raving about French Canadians."

In closing, when referring to a car and it's engine, you say rev, not rav.

Revs

1. To increase the speed of an engine.
2. The number of revolutions per minute.

High revs
Peak revs

Revving

See
Free-revving.

Yes revving is def slang that comes from revolutions. for example when you are "fueling" your car, you are upping the amount of fuel in it, when you are "revving" your car, you are upping the revolutions. I thought that was common knowledge. guess not. anyhow, that ticking noise when you start your car is pretty common bmw wide, has been as long as bmw has been around. it is commonly referenced to as valve tap. leave it alone, it wont hurt you, your car isnt going to explode. millions of bmws make this noise, you car is no different. Dont rev your engine to try to get rid of it, when the car warms up and oil has been circulated to the top of the engine where the valves are, it will lube everything up nice and the tapping will dissipate. Dont rave your engine, I am pretty sure putting any sort of drug in your fuel tank and subjecting your car to loud techno music for hours on end is going to do anything for it.

Thanks for the lessons your missing the point that I'm trying to make, my argument is about the words REVING vs RAVING not REV vs RAV.

Anyway, I would appreciate any help regarding the problem which I discribed in my original message...

I heard a little weird noise this morning from the engine belt while warming the car so I raved the engine couple of time to around 3500 – 4000 RPM while my door was open and the interior lights are on.
I noticed that when I raved the engine the lights were cutting in and out like losing power especially when the RPM is over 2500. Is this normal because of the load that I’m adding when the raving the engine?
Or I have a problem with the alternator?

Thanks
Such an old car needs new belts and a good service.

I grew up in an atmosphere of internal combustion engines. I was always told that engines are not designed to rev (or rav) with no load.

They are intended to operate under load, as in gear and driving some device such as an automobile.

I have never understood any need to rev an engine at no load except, perhaps, to make noise.
