Hi Guys,

I took the car for a breather hose replacement and noticed that the mechanic has not toped the oil. What I also found very odd was, that when the engine is running and I pull the dip stick out, something starts making rattling noise towards the end of dip stick area. When I push the stick back in, the noise is nearly gone, but I can still hear it if I try close.

I am scared if the mechanic could have dropped into the engine or somewhere else while changing the breather hose. Or something else that might damage the engine?

Any ideas/suggestions are welcome.

Cheers.

I don't think it's a good idea to ever pull the dipstick when the engine is running. Oil level is only reliable with the engine stopped for a short period to allow the oil to return to the pan.

Thanks for the tip, but does it means there is nothing to worry about?

When you pull the dip stick while the engine is running it releases the pressure inside built up by the oil pump, that could be the cause of your noise.

All the comments so far mean, there is nothing to worry. So is there any other own of E60 (M54) has a rattle noise when you remove the dip stick when the car is running?

My details: '04 E60 525i (M54 engine).

Am I worrying for nothing here (I really hope so), but the amount of issues I have discovered on this vehicle in the past 1 year is starting to make me doubt how much I like the car.

Why remove the oil dipstick while the car is running in the first place? What's the purpose?

If you take the dipstick out while engine is on you're going to get shuttering. The same if you try to take the valve cover cap off. You're allowing air to enter/escape and this will cause shuttering/rattling etc as if it's down a cylinder. Leave it long enough and you'll get an error.
