I have a rattle over small bumps in the road. It is located behind the air vent in the top part of the dash close to where the window meets the dash (behind the dash speaker). Does anyone know what is behind the air vent inside the dash? This is the area directly behind the idrive screen. A cord or something that might be tapping the dash (from below). It is very annoying.

Thanks for any help or any www.bmwtis.com diagrams.

Is the noise always there or only after the car has been driven for 5-6 miles? I had a tapping/rattling noise from the dash area and it ended up being engine related.

It is always there. Definitely isn't the engine. Sounds like a little wire or connector is hitting the dash from below...

I've just check my service report and I was wrong about the issue being engine related. Looks like it was steering/trim issue. You may want to ask you dealer to check SIB 51 13 04. See below:

Steering and Wheel Alignment. 32 04 06. February-06. E60/E63. AFS Programming ... 51 13 04. May-06. E60/E63. Rattling Noise from Center Display.
