The chime is definitely tied to the time displayed on the dash, which you set manually through the iDrive. And the chime completes about 20 seconds before the clock flips to the top of the hour. Personally, I think that's dumb, but it is what it is. Even my old VCR grabbed the correct time off the broadcast signal. You would think that car clocks would do the same thing.

My wife and I discussed this issue last night - i explained it the way it works on my current car (see below) and her 2006 325XI - and I thought that's how it was on my 2003 330XI and her 2005 X5 but she thinks they were both at 1 minute till the hour. So now I'm not sure. Maybe different years have different points that they chime.

i have a 2009 530i, its the hour chime, it goes off 3 to 4 seconds before the top of the hour
