In my previous E39 and now in my E60 it seems like the rain sensor isnt senstive enough on timing and speed, even with the sensitivety all the way up. Does anyone else have this problem? I havent mentioned it to the dealer because both cars are the same, and im thinking its just the way it is.

I've noticed that the rain sensor on my E60 is a bit tempramental. Sometimes it doesn't set the wipers to go quick enough when the rain is heavy, and other times it seems to send them into overdrive. My E39 on the other hand was pretty spot on when it came to judging how fast to set the wipe interval according to how hard the rain was falling.
I've switched the wipers to manual on a few occassions as the sensor hasn't picked up the fact that the rain is heavy enough to warrant constant wipe. It hasn't bothered my enough yet to go and ask the dealer to take a look though.

Does the rain sensitivity dial do anything? It doesn't seem to make a difference in terms of wiper speed or sensitivity whether the dial is set on 1 or 5. Don't know if this is a bug and needs to be fixed or if it's just the way it is. I actually like the wiper system on my Honda better -- where you can actually adjust the intermittent wiper speed by rotating the dial in the intermittent mode (versus adjusting rain sensitivity).

Haha thats funny. I have the sensitivity all the way down and I think its almost perfect... I dont like it sweeping untill enough water is on the windshield... for my preference i think it can go a little bit more less sensitive...
Its soooo hard to please such a wide array of people... you like it more sensitive... I like it less sensitive... BMWs got their hands full.

I had a chance to test mine this afternoon - we had 5.3 inches (corrected) in SE Connecticut.
During the downpour the wipers operated at their top speed, when the precipitation turned to mist they operated in the intermittent mode.

The speed dial does not seem to affect at all in either manual or auto mode. In auto mode, the wipers do change speed sometimes but very unexpectedly
. In manual mode, the speed seems to be constant regardless speed dial setting. I like the traditional wiper click (of the e46) much better.
