My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.

We both started from a light. Both we pretty equal in acceleration- When he shifted, I pulled ahead- When I shifted, he pulled ahead. But as we went through the gears I gained more when he shifted, because his took longer- and he gained less when I shifted, because of my faster SMG shifts. After we got into fourth gear I was clearly ahead, but not by much. If I was shifting a traditional stick, I would not have had any advantage.

I think an S4 4.2 is a pretty good match for a 545. The 0-60 MPH numbers I see are in the same range, some as low as 5 sec. Shifting speed could be the differentiator.

The S4 is actually a pig. Something like 4000 lbs  Probably heavier than your 545..

Well, the 545i Steptronic is 3,814 curb-weight stripped. That's not so different that I'd be inclined to think of the Audi as a pig, but not the 545i. And, I think the manual 545i is 3,803.

My partner has a 2006 A6 4.2, he got it about 3 months after I took delivery on my 545i and frankly - you can't compare the two... the Audi feels havier and slower, even slower in acceleration then my 2001 A6 2.7T, I've never raced him, but the Audi is definitely slower.

here's the specs from Audi's website... I was sure I was right so I had to check myself...
