Having also driven vans for a number of years, most of my my mirror work is done with the side mirrors. That said, I ALWAYS have a good scout of the space before pulling into it, as PDC doesn't always pick up low level obstructions - high curbs, those landscaping rocks that hotels tend to use and other bumper wrecking nonsense.

The beat up bumpers is more likely owing to the over-confidence of PDC users, paralell parking too close to non-PDC cars that then shunt you on the way out. Had that problem with my old Passat the day I got it. Grrr....
