If she does find out try this: "I though it would be okay since this is so important to me. If I though you would have been upset, I would have done it - really" Follow this with as much "relationship duct tape" as necessary - as suggested.
Personally I find the preemptive approach best, an ongoing campaign of thoughtfulness, flowers, etc. since you never know what might surface. Fortunately my wife doesn't notice things like that. She still asks me "what kind of car is this again"
