Are you here in the U.S.? You can go to an auto electronics shop to get a remote starter installed. I'm pretty sure the newest systems can work on a BMW.

Pukka,
I'm in Australia and this is supposed to be standard on my car as delivered. I am going to try it out today. Not sure where the menu is but i guess I'll find it.

Haven't tried using it, but I believe there is a climate control program that you can set to run at certain tiimes of the day via idrive menu...

here's the manual on LCI US 2008 e60, I'm in a 535i LCI located in the US:

http://www.e60.net/information/2008_..._Manual_US.pdf

page 116 and 117

considering the recent hot weather i should try this feature out...

The programmable climate doesnt start the engine it runs off battery and can only be used twice before the engine needs starting to charge the battery back up. It will also only cool the cabin not heat it(or only heat it with whatever warmth is left in the engine coolant.

On my wife's car i have an alarm system instaled that can start the engine remotely and also heat/cool the interior.
But on the E60 I've heard that is pretty difficult to install an aftermarket alarm system. Does anybody installed and aftermarket alarm system without any issues?

I have already used it on my LCI, It does a pretty good job getting the car bearable to get in the the deep south ( black leather interior and live in Alabama). One note, you can set 2 times for it to run, it runs for about 10 mins off the batt, but once it runs you have to reset it to run again. I guess this is a good Idea if you set it and forget you set it and leave town for a couple days. It would totally drain the batt.
I have not tried the heat but I think I remember reading in the manual that it just take the residual engine heat , so if the car has been sitting over night in the cold, it won't do much...

Adding a remote starter may be an option for older models - but from what I understand its not advisable on the newer (2008) model E60s. I asked both my dealer and an aftermarket company does does a lot of high end work about it and both advised against it (as in turned down the business because they said it could create more problems than its worth). One big concern both had was that to allow the remote starter to activate - you have to defeat the security system - leaving the car more vulnerable to theft.

Anyone with a 2008 E60 have a success story for installing a remote starter??????
