Sorry to beat a dead horse guys. I've been reading all of the posts I can find about the program updates (ie: 2.5/2.6) but have not yet noticed whether anyone has mentioned that these updates were possible for a 2004???
I really need to know. I've got several issues that I was hoping could be fixed by the updates. The last update i received was a year and a half ago (I believe it was for the bluetooth to get it to work). Anyway, i have issues with extreme slowness with iDrive on startup (as usual) and some NAV issues.
Does anyone know whether these newest updates will work on my car or are these update only for the 'newer' systems.

There are clearly updates that are newer than a year and a half that will work for a 2004 car. (As a matter of fact, at this time, I don't think there are any updates that only apply to a specific model year so the latest version should work in any E60 as far as I remember.)
Take a look here for a list of service bulletins and see if one of your problems is addressed:

Once you know a bulletin number, you can access it by following the instructions here:

After you've determined that one of your issues was addressed in a newer software version, just complain about the issue to your dealer and they'll update the software...

Thanks for the info on searching Bulletins. Never done that and I really had been interested.
Cheers guys.
I'm assuming there's no way to tell my current software version seeing as how the recent software posts I've been reading over the past month or so are indicating that the version codes are impossible to determine version from....?

Right. You can't reliably find your current version number but if you suffer from a problem that is supposedly fixed in a new release, then you're probably going to be able to get the latest version installed. Once they do that, you can ask them what version number was installed...
