I created a thread for "diesel" engine noise, and seemed like no one car. Matt BMW of California came by my place the other day, and I demonstrated the exactly problem on his 550i. He was not happy with that "diesel" engine noise.
Whenever I have AC compressor seems to be a big load for this engine. If anyone has 550i, please try to turn on AC while in Drive or in M3 and keep your foot on your brake. Stick your head out of window and hear your lovely diesel engine sound, especially in the garage.
How does it sound? Horrible!

Does this only happen with automatics? I have never heard any such noise coming from my car.

Just picked up my car from the dealer. Asked them to upgrade to Program 25. Dealer said that my car (2004 545i Jan 04 build) was not "on the list" for the new program. Does that sound strange? What do I have to do to have them install program 25?

Thanks

Bill

I'm excited about the faster boot - but to tell you the truth, I don't think the sensors are placed correctly on this car (550) to ensure a smooth start-up and smooth running. Every CIP has tried to fix some sort of idle startup issue.

of note, I have CIP 21 and my car used to sound like a diesel truck on startup - that is gone now - nothing changed (well I did have the crank sensors replaced, but it was better before then).

Personally, while I expect to get 25 when I get my oil changed later this year, I also expect to see some change (and not necessarily for the better) in the performance of my engine.

Yes, v25 is available in Chicago. I just had it installed today (Fields BMW) and this was the first update I've had since the car was new 18 months ago.

I claimed symptoms of engine pinging, rough idle on cold starts, and slow iDrive inputs. They obviously installed the new software because the iDrive screens are different colors than before and the menus are updated. It all looks nice and works well.

I tested a few things so far and the boot time does not seem much faster; the legal screen goes away nicely after a few seconds; and responses to controler inputs seem slightly faster.

The engine still has a slight ping but is somewhat muted from before; throttle response is smoother than ever without any hesitation; and the last-moment surge while braking to a stop is gone.

You do lose all your presets: radio stations, navigation addresses, bluetooth, etc ... so plan on spending time re-entering those. The radio now has RDS and both surround funtions (Concert and Theater) were still there.

All-in-all it seems like a good move so far.

I do not remember if I ever posted the PROGMAN 25.01.00 updated bulletin. Here it is in PDF form.

Even though we think there are more current versions out (someone received Final Report with a Target Data Status ending in -525 which has to be higher than 25.01.00) BMW has not released an updated SIB yet AND they may not if in their opinion no real vehicle issues were addressed. Some updates are simply to get it to load without error or crashing (housekeeping tasks).
