Hi all

I've got a few intermittend problems for a while. My e60 was bought a month and a half ago from a BMW dealer. 2007 model with 4k miles on the clock. I've had afew things bothering me for the last month and now a third one just came up. BTW my car is a manual and 2.5L v6.

1)While on standstill, sometimes i cannot shift to first. The stick goes up but then just "locks". At that moment i'm trying to do it 3-4 times and nothing. I have to change into second and then to first to get it to engage. Is this just a thing a have to live with or indicates other problems ?

2)The engine sounds like a superchanger" while accelerating . I've read this is normal. Is this true ?

3)When on first - and very rare on second- and depress the clutch at around 1500rpm the car jerks quite a bit. I've read something similar called trasmittion slam but that was only in autos. Any comments ?

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks

What do you mean, it locks in first gear? You can't get it into gear?

If so, it's certainly not something you "have to live with."

And the car shouldn't do anything when you depress the clutch except drift in neutral, between gears. If you mean that it jerks between shifts, then that's just a matter of knowing how to drive a manual correctly, to match the revs.

Maybe i need to clarify alittle bit. When a say locks i mean i can move it up but it does't go in. It's like it doesn't let me -like if you are doing 60 and trying to shift down to first.

On the clutch thing, when i depress the clutch even a little bit , it starts to jerk back and forth. Like i'm a first month driver with no clutch control
That is stange

You mentioned in your post that you depress the clutch at 1500 RPM...I assume you are in the process of shifting gears? I've found that the smoothest shift in the manual 5 is at 3000 - 3500 RPM or higher. Anything lower than that and the shift is not as smooth. I've never had trouble shifting to first...and my engine doesn't sound like a supercharger...so, can't comment on that.

Sounds like a clutch pressure plate and/or throw-out bearing alignment issue. If you can't get it into gear, it's off-center. If it jerks, it's not releasing evenly. Not sure about the supercharger sound.

Sounds like the sychronizers for 1 and 2 are worn. Was this by any chance a dealer demo or loaner car? I'm guessing the previous drivers weren't good manual drivers. If you can double clutch without a problem then it is the sychronizers.

If you could put stick into 1st..... push the clutch pedal 2 to 3 times... it will help. Especially when engine is cold...

When it won't go into 1st will 2nd work? If so, try first again.

Either way, check with the dealer. It doesn't sound right.

I can't comment on the sound of the In-Line 6 2.5L engine since I haven't driven one.

You for sure got some problems in there.

If your under warranty take it to the dealership. If not find a good indy mech. to look at it.

Your engine sound chances are is normal. I've heard a few people describe BMW's smaller inlines sounding like that.
