Hello,
I am new on this forum. The reason I registered was because of the fact that I was intended to buy a BMW 545i from 2003 or 2004. The economical v8 in comparison with the v8 from an Audi s4 seemed the ideal car for me.
But today I've read of the problem of the engine ticking noises which seemed to be very common on the 545i.
So know I am not sure of still buying this car, indeed I saw that also others BMW's with valvetroninc systems could have this problem. So I am not sure of buying a BMW at all.
Is this a real problem with the 545i and other BMW's. I now own a BMW 530i 2001, I don't know if this car have valvetronic but it has no thicking noise.
So what to do, if this is not the car for me I think I go for the Alpina b3s.

Yes I am from Europe more specifically The Netherlands. I certainly agree on the fact that a b3s is more rare but a 5 series is more luxurious and has more space inside and is updated with the newest technology as dynamic drive, active steering etc.
But the valve problems really worries me

no CPOs in Netherland or warranties? get one that has the warranties, you should be fine.

The ticking seemed to be a small problem with few cars affected. Nothing widespread or anything. So I won't worry about it.
Good luck in your purchase and any questions just ask away.

I have 53,000 miles, or 85,000 km on my 2005 545i. I have had no engine ticking problems, or no other problems for that matter.

I have a 2005 545 and it has a barely noticeable minor ticking issue when it is cold. I believe that it is simply due to the more complex Valvetronic valve train. I reported it to my dealer who said it is normal and I have confidence that if in the unlikely event it evolves into something more serious that it will be dealt with under warranty. I would not be terribly concerned about it and I would not consider it a reason to avoid the model.
