Do you have had problems with I-drive booting itself after starting the car? Sometimes it throws back german language and volume is on mute. No date or time, just --- visible in display.

How have you fixed the problem? The problem happens intermittently.

Car is -04 E61 with latest software and a new battery.

I have an 08 535 and sometimes when i turn the car on the screen just stays black for 30 seconds or so, today, when i turned it on it didnt recognize my IPOD and i couldn't choose "CD" (which is the standard selector for the IPOD when connected), so I had to rock out to some crappy radio station while my IPOD sits in the glove box with 10,000+ songs on it. awesome.

Whenever something electrical happens that is weird, i just remember, hey its a German car. they can engineer the fuck out of engines and suspensions, but they still cant figure out how to keep an electric window motor from burning out, or a light bulb from shorting out.

I've owned my e60 for just over 2 years and a couple times it has taken a good 20 seconds for the idrive screen to boot up...strange, but no big deal if you ask me.

One time last summer though, my idrive screen didn't boot up AND none of the climate controls, radio/CD, etc worked. I restarted the car and the same thing happened. I let the car sit for 6-8 hours parked (off) and it hasn't happened again....very strange.

I was getting this "freezing" problem where my idrive would just stay black and not come on no radio either and also other times where when it booted up it would reset the CD player back to song 1, this has since all been solved with my latest software update.

How do you check what is the current software version?

Yes, but after a short time on the road it re-boots itself. I still plan to bring in to the dealer. The soft had been updated once so far. It is an October 06 build.

So the problem exist in even later models, thats a shame!

Can anyone advise how to check software version of the car?

Try reading this for a re-set

iDrive Reset

And here for getting your software version

Check Progman Version

Good luck.
