Hey Guys

i got a 2006 525i with 130k, my heater has never had a problem before but a couple days ago i left my house, it was about - 5 and i went to the store, my heater was working but when i left the store my vents were blowing cold air which was weird then i got a message that said my engine temp is getting high and to drive with caution then about 5 minutes later on i got a message saying that my engine has over heated and to pull over and turn of the car,

i did, waited, started my car and cold air still was coming out then i turned the car off, kept it off for about 5 minutes then started it then the heat started to come out and i never got that over heating messgae again.

again today same thing, cold air started coming out of the car after like 1 hour of driving, then i kept it off for 5 minutes & still it was cold, i had to turn my car off like 7 times and wait before the heater was blowing hot air

anyone experience this?

thanks

Damn first off 130k on an 06 wow you rolling. I would first check my coolant level, feel the top hose and see if it is hot if not thermostat stuck closed if hot then seems to be open. If level was or has been low before you may have air in the system. Also check your oil dip stick to see if you have a milk shake or coolant in the oil. does the fans come on when the car gets hot? do these prelimary test and get back to the board

Does sound like a stuck thermostat. Hopefully, nothing more than that.

Where would one find the oil dip stick?

Sounds like the thermostat.

I-m with the stuck T-stat crowd. One way to check is to feel both the upper and lower radiator hoses (avoiding burns and the radiator fan). If one is noticeably cooler/hotter than the other, the T-stat's gotta go.

Other ways to check for a bad cylinder head gasket is to look for whiter than normal exhaust or listen for a gurgling sound immediately after shutting off the engine.

I hope this isn't the problem.
