The difference is no more than a dollar a full tank. The lower octane will retard the timing to prevent knock an ping. The car will consume more gas so you will probably give back the dollar.
Meanwhile you are lining the cycinder heads and valves with more crap than neccessary lessening engine life.
So kindly ignore that "someone" at BMW and use your own common sense. You are driving a high compression V8, what do you think you should pump?

That said, it's still a no-brainer to use premium gas. You've gotta pay to play...

Price of fuel is above US$4.20 per gallon (US) in Singapore for 98 Octane Unleaded (there is a rather high ad volerum duty levied by the govt ).
What's the price of fuel in the US and in the UK for similar grade gas?

[/quote]I was going on the low side from the middle grade. I hope no one here pumps the lowest grade in their 545i

Gotcha. I assumed they meant lowest grade.
Either way, we have no reason to complain over here considering what we could be paying if we lived elsewhere...

In UK unleaded fuel is 85 pence per litre. I did some sums, this works out to $6.06
per US Gallon ( if my calculations are correct! ). What is it there?

I would never use anything less, though.

New Jersey, USA is considered to be one of the cheapest states for gas. All other 49 sates in the US are more expensive than NJ. And since HK & UK are pumping at the rate of $4 - $6 per gallon, I would say we are pretty lucky here in the states. but it still hurts to dish out $2.40 per gallon for premium :'(
Oh, for the record....I have always put 93 octane in my 545i. I don't think saving $3 per tank is going to really make or break my bank account. Plus it gives me a peice of mind that I am doing everything in power to keep this car clean and running without an engine knock
Plus I think i burn about $3 worth of gas everything I get that urge to step on that accelerator every now and then to feel that awesome power of the v8

Does anyone here NOT put premium in their tanks?
BMW told me to only use premium when I got my car. However my friend told me that he talked to someone that works at BMW and they said that regular fuel works fine, as long as it's from a bigger gas company like BP, Mobil, or Shell. He has been using reguar fuel in his 745i without problems.
With the gas prices being so high, this would be an easy way to save a little money.
