Dear E60 Forum,

My E60 does not have a power socket in the boot. The manual shows the socket is supposed to be behind the boot tail-light panel and is optional. I'm thinking of putting in a socket to plug-in some accessories. Has anyone done this before and know the cost of doing this? Thanks

I've never done this, but the easiest way to do this might be to run a line from the power socket in the passenger footwell (which probably doesn't get used much anyway), back under the rug into the boot aka trunk.

I have done this.

I simply bought a 12V socket, drilled a hole in the predefined spot and connected it to the fusebox (right side of trunk).

Short description:
  1. Open trunk and remove right-side panel (2 plastic screws)
  2. Disconnect battery
  3. Remove plastic panel with 3 screws (they have plastic protection caps)
  4. Drill hole in plastic panel and mount 12V socket
  5. Unmount fusebox, choose an unused fuse (I used the seat heater fuse slot and put a 10A fuse in it) and connect the + wire to it
  6. Connect the GND wire to chassis, a convenient spot is underneath the right rear light
  7. Mount fusebox, connect battery
  8. Ready!
Make sure you use 2.5mm2 or better cable, and a 10A fuse.

Takes less than 30 minutes. Cost is <5€. Good luck.

One more remark: When choosing a fuse location, make sure it's either switched or 12V continous, depending on your preference.
I wanted continuous supply so I did that, but if you do so you must remember that anything connected to it can drain your battery.

Use a multimeter to check this.
