how come some E60's have power outlets in the rear and some dont?

That's a US spec feature.
US cars have power outlets in the passenger footwell and two of 'em in the rear's center console.
All E60's have the one in the ashtray and the one in the trunk.

In the UK, the one in the trunk is only there if you order the split fold rear seats.

Ok, that's strange.
So BMW is throwing power outlets all over the car, but in every country it's in a different place...

The one in the trunk belongs to the folding back seats. (at least in PT)

does anyone have problem with the power outlets? mine are way too tight. i can't put my ionizer in the rear center ones . i used to put the same ionizer in my e39.

My power outlets are a little tight but I can get the plugs in there.

jimbo, i think you haven't heard about my "advanture" with my dealer. i think i'm dealing with one of the worst bmw dealers on the entire planet ! anyway, i'll give it a try. wish me luck .

I was looking at the handbook last night (sad I know) and I noticed the power socket in the rear and it was shown without the asterisk (I think that normally means it is standard), but my 545i (without split rear seats) does not have it. So the old adage RTFM does not seem to mean much with BMW.
