That's a US spec feature.
US cars have power outlets in the passenger footwell and two of 'em in the rear's center console.
All E60's have the one in the ashtray and the one in the trunk.

jimbo, i think you haven't heard about my "advanture" with my dealer. i think i'm dealing with one of the worst bmw dealers on the entire planet

I was looking at the handbook last night (sad I know) and I noticed the power socket in the rear and it was shown without the asterisk (I think that normally means it is standard), but my 545i (without split rear seats) does not have it. So the old adage RTFM does not seem to mean much with BMW.
