42 MPG (UK)
80% Urban 20% Suburban stop/start

Envy the UK mileage, but not diesel at USD 8 per UK gallon!

When I first bought my used 535d (uk 2005) I loved the performance of it, but after a couple of weeks i really wanted to check how good it was on MPG.
So one weekend on a trip to East London (170 miles roundtrip), I reset the consumption trip computer, hit 55mph and turned the cruise control on. 55mp being the optimum economy speed. I was on a mission to get the best MPG out of the car, so I always was looking ahead at traffic and changing lanes early so I'd minimise the braking as well. It was 90% motorway miles.
By the time I got back I had, believe it or not, averaged 45 MPG (6.5l/100km, 38mpg/US)!!!
But I'm now only doing short city sprints and averaging 20MPG UK.
But I console myself by knowing if needed, my car can do the necessary economical MPG.

I'm too recent an owner to offer any mpg numbers, but I'm wondering how accurate the instant mpg reading is? My reason for asking is that on pure highway and without extreme accelaration the dial shows over 30+ at steady 70mph cruise - which i find to be most impressive. "Efficient Dynamics" at work?

What brand gas do you use? Does it matter? I've seen other posts on other forums that swear buy Shell gas. I just try to find the least expensive 93 octane in town.
