I am based in Finland, but this is not a Finland specific thing. Do not believe all the BS the dealers are telling. I checked the German spec at bmw.de, and it is exactly the same. Go and download the pricelist PDF. It says that AWD models come with 138 style 17" rims "ohne notlaufeigenshaften", i.e. non-RunFlats. Donut spare is standard without extra cost. You can order the car with RunFlats "without extra cost", but then you lose the spare tire, which must be ordered as an extra option (option code 300).

Wish You All a Merry Christmas!

All the 5s in the UK with 16" and 17" standard fit wheels come with run flats, my optional 17" wheels also came with run flats, colleagues have 1-series, 3-series(new) and X5 all with run flats. My wifes Mini has run flats, so not all European countries ship standard wheels without run flats maybe in Finland they do for easier changing to winter tyres.

The 16" wheels didn't used to be RFs? (Thus why all the reviews 'loved' the 16" wheels!)

The 19" option is still non-RF... (However, I spot that Dunlop now do RFs in the 19" size... It might not be long before they do start OEM them... )

My dealer explained the BMW E60 tire installation policy in Europe:
1) If you order your car with standard rims, it always comes with
non-RunFlat tires. In case of RWD 6-cyl models they are 16",
AWD and 8-cyl models 17", but always non-RunFlat.
2) If you order your car with optional rims (bigger than the standard)
you always get RunFlats from the factory.
I've just checked the "car builder" section of the BMW UK website - it would appear the same situation exists as when I ordered my car in late 2005:

1. Only wheel size avilable with non-RFTs is the 16" (and only when it is standard equipment) eg. 520 non-SE, 520d non-SE, OR the 19" Style 172 (only available as an option on Sport models).

2. All other vehicles (4/6/8 cylinder) are specced as standard with 17" RFT, including bottom end SE models, eg 520 SE,. 520d SE.

3. The 16" non-RFT is not availble as an option on any models, ie. only where specified as standard kit.

The AWD spec is not available in the UK - it could be that the policy for Finland differs to the UK, possibly meaning that it varies across European regions/countries?

Yup, that was my understanding... However, don't the 16" wheels look awful?

One can live with them, especially in the wintertime when to sun doesn't come up at all

Picked up my UK 525d yesterday with non Run-Flats (Michelins) on standard 17" wheel. I specifically asked for Run-Flats to be deleted or I would buy elsewhere. To be fair to BMW, they did this (and provided the space saver, jack etc) at zero cost.

I think that BMW are reasonably flexible if you are firm and the requirement is technically possible.

But think what a dangerous car you're now driving!

Any issues with insurance?
