Just got a portable GPS unit, and I recently have placed it on the ashtray area in front of the shifter
However, occassionally the signal dropped out, I wonder if it's too low from the windshield, or if my GPS sensor is not as good as the newer ones.

So for those of that use portable GPS, can you try it out for me and report back? If you open the ash tray, it JUST fits the GPS. I think it should fit most of the 3.5" unit and some of the 4.3" unit. It sits at an angle and a pretty safe location, and can be move out of sight very quickly.

I like that location (so I don't have to do the suction cup removal), but the signal drops out sometime which could be annoying...

The GPS needs to be able to 'look' at the sky. Its not like a mobile phone, so your positioning is bad. If you want to keep it there buy an additional antenna and place it on the dashboard.

yeh i heard technically it should have a view to the sky, but i wonder if people have got it to work by placing it lower
from what i heard once you have it locked it may be a bit more lenient on the gps location.
i heard someone with an E60 have it at that location too
also there's some view to the sky thru the side window...

I don't have NAV and I keep my NUVI 350 in the open ash tray. Works fine but the NUVI does have that flip up ant.
