Poor MPG
Took car back to the stealers this morning and as expected they found nothing wrong.
Wasn't helped by the fact that even though the avg mpg showed 19.8mpg, my avereage speed indicator showed 14.7mph so they wouldn't even inspect the car as the mpg is about right for the mph (point taken).
I've reset both now and will monitor and if my mph increases but my mpg does not then it's straight back in again.
On another note, my headlights seem to be full of dust from the INSIDE.
Is this a known problem? Can I open the units and clean them?
Thanks for all the replies by the way, it was all appreciated.

....check out this thread and see how far we are off reality. it is a real shame that the difference in technology between pre lci and lci models is so dramatic: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?show...50792&hl=rsyed
Just to bring you all up to date.
I took the car back to the dealer I bought it from and they inspected the car for 2 hours.
End result, no problem with mpg. They took the car for a cruise at 40mph for 3 miles and it returned a value of 36mpg so the town driving we do obviously kills the fuel consumption.
On the brighter side, they have agreed to change my headlights under warranty which had this 'dust inside the lens' problem.

I have had the same issue with my 530d sport. Around town ( London) it is terrible.. 19mpg average for the last two years. BMW have checked the car over and as long as there are no errors showing on the computer they don't take it any further. However, on a motorway run I am getting 38 to 40 mpg consistently. Conclusion is BMW Diesel Auto + Town Driving = BAD MPG..!
However, it still does not explain why some people report they are averaging 26+ in a 535d around town..??
Perhaps I have a lemon too..! I love it to bits though!!!!
Interested to know what your dealer comes up with.

I have a 58 e60 530D M Sport, with 7000 on teh clock when i bought it (a ew days ago). First i didn't notice the mpg but then i saw that it was an appaling 20mpg!! I was shocked! My old e39 528 which had done 200,000 miles did better at 22mpg. I took a trip recently from Glasgow to the Lake District. Which only gave me around 34.4 MPG on cruise, with the climate control on (A/C was on but not using it for cold air only for climate control).
Last night i thought i'll switch off the A/C and i saw the mpg jump from 20 to around 34! But it didn't last for long as i drove to work (about a mile in start/stop traffic) it dropped down to around 19/20 *sigh. Going to see the dealer after work today to ask him to have a look.
When i spoke to the dealers (person who sold me the car) he was surprised at such a low mpg, and asked me to reset, which i did as per my work commute (sub 20mpg). It's a new car about 6 months old and only 7000 on the clock. I love the car and it's my 3rd bmw, but i bought the diesal for the economy if i wanted it at sub 25 i would have bought the petrol or M3/M5.
I'll keep you posted as to what the dealer says.

Sounds like short distance + big engine = bad mpg
Does that sound about right?
I can live with the bad mpg but not a bad/faulty car. I've paid way too much for this car for it to be faulty, but a bad mpg i can accept as it drives so lovely! Hence it's my 3rd beemer

Thats not good at all, I have exactly the same car on an 2005 and 25,000 miles, bought in October from the dealer, I get from a full tank up to 550 miles taking it easy and at least 450 thrashing around and 500 average driving town urban etc.
My car had 2 new clutches fitted at 20,000 miles and I had to really push for them as I knew something was not right stiff pedal funny noise only to get the idiot mechanic, I say this not lightly as most are excellent, to tell me it was normal, haha, so dont take any crap, leave it with them as they can use it and check it and get a courtesy M5 to use. Seriously keep on at them until they sort it out, my clutch by the way had weak splines, they fitted a new one, same issue, went to a different dealer and all sorted under warranty so several ?000 worth done, I sorted them out with a few bottles to keep thewm sweet and now have one tech I deal with.

Don't you find it shocking that we as consumers need to push them so hard to get decent service. The cars aren't cheap! Whenever i go to the dealers i feel as though they are doing me a favour ;/

Welcome to the truth. Anyone here who thinks they are buying a diesel and will get huge savings, please think again. Do your calculations first and ask people for real world figures.
I have a 535d which is used on a daily commute of roughly 15miles per day. I hardly ever get on the motorway for long distance trips. As I see it, the diesel doesn't have much advantage over the petrol engine car. maybe a few mph here and there but thats about it. I see 24mpg driving like a lunatic (heavy foot and making sure both turbos are used). And if I drive real slow and light footed, nothing more than 27mpg. BMW service garage tells me I am getting far better than I should hence they won't even look into it.
One needs to factor in the price difference between petrol and diesel and then make sure the diesle car returns in excess of that difference. Otherwise its a total waste of time. I haven't even got to the part of calculating the initial price to buy a diesel which tends to be higher.
As for me when I change car next, it will be a big cc engine (V8 hopefully) and use the money saved from buying a diesel car towards LPG conversion. At roughly 0.55p per litre, I will be pretty happy with that set up for a long time. Great savings, great engine sound, and great driving satisfaction when running in petrol mode with foot to the metal. Never be in a diesel again.
cheers
