well I live in Canada and get worse winters then any of you guys. I originally was sold on a 530xi, but once I drove one and felt how heavy the steering was, and after test driving a 545 on ice with the traction control, needless to say I ordered a 550! If it gets THAT bad in the dead of winter I'll get a used SUV and drive it for a few months of the year.

If I could get the XI with a V8... I'd take the XI. So that leaves me with my 545i and my winter vehicle!

I have read the debate on this forum regarding AWD and RWD; very informative. I have a great deal of respect for the posters on this forum and their knowledge. I was curious, knowing what you know now, if you were buying now, what would you buy? XI(AWD) or I(RWD)?
I live in a very hilly area on the north shore of Long Island. I have owned many powerful RWD cars in the past, most with "traction control" and equipped with snow tires in winter. There were many nights when I could not make it home, up the final hill to my house. With traction control engaged, the wheels woudn't spin, but the car wouldn't move forward either. I ultimately decided to get only AWD vehicles in the future and have for the last few cars. My first AWD car was an Audi S8, then an Audi allroad 4.2, and now a 530xi. I would only get a RWD car if I had a spare AWD car to use when it snowed or if snow were predicted. I hope I can get a 550xi in a year or two, or better yet a 650xi.

Hi tesla,

How does the S8 compare against the others?
Performance, comfort, running costs... anything what comes to your mind.

I would appreciate your thoughts since Audi S8 is in my shopping list with 530xd, 535d and (do I want to say) A6 3.0 TDI

I know that S8 is a bit different and the biggest difference is that it runs on gasoline and is older.
But on the other hand initial cost is way cheaper and with that price difference you can buy gasoline for years.

FYI

I live in the Midwest where the land is relatively flat. While it can snow frequently in winter, the snow is not usually deep (nearly all storms < 6 to 7 inches). I won't get the XI because I need my V8 and snow tires covers 98% of the road conditions in the winter. On the 1-2 days per year where we get socked and I worry about my 545i, I either work from home with my computer plugged in, or I take my wife's SUV to work. Pretty simple in my case.

I agree. In Saskatchewan it's like a plate of glass! So I should get by, and like mihusky says, the few days of really bad stuff? Stay home or drive an SUV.

At first I complained about the lack of a V8 xi. However, after surviving through 7-9 in of snow with 18" snow tires, I do not think I would need AWD anymore...

The S8 was under warranty the whole time I had it so there were no running costs (all maintenance included in USA). The car I had before the S8 was a 740iL. The S8 was a great car but did not feel quite as refined as the 7 series.... but I was able to get home every night.

It sure is. On the really bad nights my son and I watch the cars try to get up the hill after I have made it home. BMW's....some make it and some don't, mostly the 3series xi's. Mercedes....only the 4matics make it. Front wheel drive cars...some make it and some don't. AWD and 4WD all make it up. I remember one night having to go around two honda accords which couldn't make it, while the allroad just plowed ahead.

The only reason I am not in a 530 right now is that back in 2004, they didn't make AWD. Maybe next year.
