Ya M5 steering wheel is leather.
But as for the original question. I've been questioning that myslef. I dont feel the heat as I use a sunshade but It surely doesnt feel like leather to me. In my Lexus its smooth LEATHER!
I think the SMG steering wheel is plastic.

Hi,
the rims are covered with leather. The process of covering the rim is manual and requires quite a lot of labour (stitching). But of course, it's not "raw" leather. The material is colored, painted, impregnated and treated to age in a good way. I guess that this treatment makes the leather look and feel somewhat artificial. Same goes for seats.

As for the wood trim, it is actually wood veneer bent and glued onto a plastic or aluminium support. The most impressive of them (in my nerd opinion) is the maple anthracite which is colored with athracite pigment to achieve a very special look.

/M

I thought my Sport Wheel was made of leather like in past BMWs. Today when getting into the car after it sat in the sun all day I nearly burned my hands when took the wheel. I've only had that happen with faux leather wheels and have never had that problem in a BMW even when I lived in Tucson. Any one know for sure? Leather or not?

DUDE thats what I think! But the regular triangle steering wheel from the loner 525 that i drove felt just as plasticy.... I think the E90s feel the same too... maybe I just forget and they felt better than the SMG wheel, I'm not sure now. Can anyone confirm?

The SMG steering wheel rim feels just like the top part of the doors, which I'm sure is just plastic.

If it was leather, it would probably be soft, like the armrest on the door...

I don't remember what material the regular steering wheel is though...

Lexus/Toyota leather is smooth, so it's easily wears off if using leather cleaner. I'd prefer leather BMW uses on steering wheel.

My wheel is leather but remember its the plastic of the wheel that is conducting the heat and not the leather

Actually, mine feels more like hard rubber!!!  It's really the only peave I have about the car...well that and that anything I put in the cubby hole under the CD player flies out with any accelleration!!!

I really miss the ultra comfortable yet highly effective Anthracite //M steering wheel my 330i came with.

Where is this plastic you speak of that is conducting the heat to the `leather' that past BMWs seem to have been missing?

I'm starting to long for the days when there was vinyl, leather and wood steering wheels. The more modern "you can't tell it's not leather" leather isn't cutting it for me. Alcantara would be nice if it was available.

I think alcantara would decompose as a steering wheel material. The sweat and friction from your hands would rip it to schreds over time.
