lot's of cheap places in SoCal, but also lots of crappy places. finding a good shop is actually not as easy as you would think. lots of shops here don't even bother painting in a booth.
dealership aren't always better, sometimes a lot worse. i had some parts (not my bmw) done by a guy that does paint/bodywork at a big mazda/dodge dealership. he was REALLY cheap and was referred to me so i figured that he'd do a decent job. when i went to pick up the car, i found out that his "shop" consisted of tents set up at the back of the dealership lot. all the painting was done outdoors. yikes!!!
where ever you go, make sure to visit their shop and check out their work first.

The OP's problem is he's already getting the work done, and in the process the guy is trying to "jailhouse" (ass rape) him. I got mine done for around $900 paint and install, so right around the actual estimate he gave you originally. So either they are really shitty at writing estimates (because no matter what part OEM or replica they use they will ALWAYS have prep and fitment work to do) or they are gouging you - I am leaning towards the latter. They figure - "ok, he dropped it off and we have started. what is he going to do? take it somewhere else? HAHAHAHAHAHA"
They figure they have you by the short and curlies they can do whatever they want.

I just laid it down with this guy so hopefully he will do the right thing. Its not like I am looking for a deal, I am just looking for a fair shake. I am even willing to pay more than the average...just not 1800

Maybe you should just hand over a few hundred and say "F' it, I am taking my business somewhere else". Better that than having to "negotiate" with someone who is hard bent on screwing you in the first place.

Since you have your own M Kit......Here is my quote:
Custom M-Tech kit on a Bayerische Motoren Werke E60
Custom match paint 2 pints (2 quarts thinned) @ $20.00 = $40.00
Flex additive 1 pint @ 10.00
Clearcoat 1 qt @ $13.00
Clearcoat Hardener @ $10.00
Adhesives and hardware @ $25.00
Sandpaper 600/1000/2000 @ $10.00
Prep and Paint Labor 3 hours @ $40.00/hr = $120.00
Installation labor 4 hours @ $40.00/hr = $160.00
Total: $388.00
tax @ 7% $27.16
One hell of a good job = $415.16 *Not Inclusive
*considering this is your own kit, there may be some modifications that need to be done which could increase price due to time/materials. However, given my experience in these matters I would cap this price at $800.00 for any and all work needed to be done has proven to be so difficult that it would extend the original cost by 100%. Thanks and good luck with your search.

Thank you guys all for your input. Weird thing. I went there at the end of the day and the owner of the shop was telling the guy to hurry up on my car because he was losing his ass on it. I am not sure if he means to give me the original quote or he means that at 1800 he is losing his ass. I will keep you all posted, Car gets painted and baked tomm.

Baked? For? He's matching paint and doing patch panel paint work....not the entire vehicle. I would have used fast dry clearcoat, wetsanded and polished. Maybe he's charging you all that money for his electricity bill. LOL The "hurry up" is just for show because you were there. It means he intends to ass-rape you with no vaseline.
