Right, I doubt it will ever get past The US DOT.

I saw both 1 series and the new 3 series in Munich ED center. The new 3 series is already available in some European countries.

No, not to assist you while getting out, that's what the light in the bottom of the door is there for. The light under the mirror is there to assist you getting in, when you approach the car and open it with the remote you are able to see if there is water or mud, etc....

I don't have the ELP but does the mirror light come on when you open the door to get out from teh inside or only when you remotely open the door?
Note sure what options are available in the US, but there is an extended lights package (at a cost) available in Ireland that provides small halogen puddle lights in the door mirrors, footwell lights and an additional light in the boot/trunk.

Halogen? You guys only get Halogen in Ireland? ITs all LEDs here for me. I'm almost positive they are LEDs. (like 5 of them) under the side mirrors. The puddle light under the doors are halogen.

I didn't get that option myself but somone I know with an E60 picked it. He said they were halogen (or the salesman told him they were. What do they KNOW!!!). I didn't see them in operation in the dark, but in daylight there was a blue-ish glow from underneath the mirror. I don't recollect the lights in the lower door being any different to mine, so I presumed the mirror was halogen and the doors the standard bulbs. Next time I see him I'll check it out.

The white lights only turn on when I use my remote to open the door. As for the 3 series, I did see people driving them around in the ED center. So it is in production for sure. Don't know if they are start selling them or not yet.

Here is a pic of them on from some other car here on E60.net

And I went out there and took some pics of them off... they are definitely not halogens...
