Absolutely, at least the air-cooled ones were. Their engines were bullet-proof. Not really keeping up with the water-cooled ones because as a traditionalist, I don't really consider them to be 911's, with all due respect to current owners.

Well, the water-cooled models are essentially proving to be pretty bullet-proof, are better looking (at least to my eyes), are much faster, and have much more modern technology than their older brothers.

With all due respect, of course, to air-cooled owners.

See, here's where we differ. It is exactly the "much more modern technology" that drove away purists and traditionalists such as myself (and I'm not the only one). I have driven my friend's water-cooled Porsche and to me the engine sounds more like an American muscle car than the angelic jet trumpet of years past. I doubt that any of today's stock 911s could be faster than my highly modified, weight-stripped, race prepared 911 of yesteryear. The shop even removed the radio and speakers since I never listened to it because just listening to that engine put me in a trance. I am sure that there were plenty of BMW purists who just walked away from the brand as the cars became more technologically advanced, ie. less reliable.

Porsche is still a great car though and still more reliable than the Ferraris and Maseratis of this world. Enjoy your Porsche.

For me, the Maserati engine note (particularly on the S model) is actually much better than even the M5. This thing sounds like a Ferrari - as it should, as the Maserati V8 engine was designed and built in Maranello...
Hmmm... I have never heard an S model, the one I saw on the road was just the regular model and the exhaust note was not that involving.

Yes indeed, but there IS a definite correlation between a sexy woman's curves and a sexy car's curves!
No doubt about it...

I'll take curves over straight and skinny any day of the week...
