Are there many performance upgrades available for the 530i. I haven't been able to find many.

Chiptuning is the best you can do. Try upsolute.com, speedinnovation.com, etc...
They claimed they it'll improve throttle response.

I did some search on this topic over the internet also, the only thing came up was a thread from E90Forum, which Upsolute in Toronto Canada can do our cars with the N52 engines. I will call the guy tomorrow and ask for more details then post them here.

apart from 'chip' which is a must do.

i would also add cold air intake
oil cooler
short shifter (if manuel)
performance exhaust from center pipe
cam shafts with advance timing (void warranty)

you can also improve handling significantly by:

front and rear strut tower bars.
K&N air fliter.
performance suspension.
cross drill vented brakes.
19" wheels.

i was told there is a 2% power gain, but the benefit is more like psychological? just do it while you are at it.

Air dams, fins and spoilers will improve both handling and speed - otherwise why would people possibly buy them?

I'd say focus on weight.

-Your own (if applicable)
-Lighter wheels and tires
-Remove spare

For handling, just pick up some really hi-perf tires, perhaps the Yokohama Advan Neova AD07, or perhaps the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3.

In the age of modern computer engine management, intakes and chip tuning for naturally aspirated cars is snake oil at best. At worst it's snake bite - in many cases making you slower than when you started.

There is no spoon.

I'm not a fan of K&N air filters. Their oil filters are nice. But I don't buy into the air filter thing. And be careful not to over oil your K&N or you might be looking at a new MAF sensor.

Whatever people say there's no reasonable way to upgrade the performance of a gas BMW.

You might gain some 10-15 hp and the same in torgue, but it's not sensible.

The diesels with Turbos is another story...
