My Ride: 2006 E60 530i
Hey guys,
So I drive a 2006 Automatic 530i, with the standard PRND(S/MS) shifter. However, what I noticed is that my shifter's silver area is starting to peel, and it's really weird feeling and makes the car look strange.
This isn't the first time I've dealt with something peeling, I've already stripped the soft rubber stuff from my drivers side window panel, but if I were to strip the chrome on my shifter it'd look absolutely horrible (It's black underneath).
Any suggestions as to what I should do? I was thinking I could maybe wrap it, but I'm not sure.

The clearcoat on my '04 shift knob (chrome and leather) started peeling. So, all I did was use my thumbnail to help it along while waiting at traffic lights. Now, the clearcoat is 99% gone and shift knob looks better than ever. Seems yours is black and just a bit different.

Pretty common problem I suspect, mine has been peeling since I bought my car - almost 5 years ago. I pretty much do as suggested, peel off as much as you can and live with it. Sadly, unlike our brethren with manual trannies, our automatics don't have reasonably priced (and in some cases tasteful) replacements. I have seen lighted ones on eBay, but they looked ridiculous.

I took it off, taped off the leather sides and painted the whole center strip matte black. I tried wrapping it and it just looked like shit so I went with the paint job.
