Bearing in mind that this occurs most in warmer climates, are you guys suncream users?. I've read that it is
pretty aggressive stuff & does damage paint & plastics etc. If you have it on your hands & touch paintwork, it will mark it, if left. Just a suggestion, not much of a problem here!
Happend to my last 2005 E61, and I'm located in Sweden, warm... NO... Don't know if the LCI is better yet.

No peeling of any plastics yet but after 6 months the leather on the steering wheel is starting to wear off... can anything be done about that?

good thing someone brought this up. the paint has been
peeling for a while now gradually. it is an odd feeling
to see plastic peel like that coming from bmw.

maybe it is the weather? the high desert gets well over 100 during the summer
and below freezing at night during winter.

Thanks guys for the advices...

I contacted BMWNA, told them about the problem, mentioning that many people got their peeling plastic replaced, and got the answer this morning saying that they can't advise me over email and that I should talk to my local dealer, who alredy said NO... So, back to square one :-) Is that panel available as a part? If so, where could I find it? Again, my service adviser checked and said that the panel is not available by itself but it comes together with the whole control board...

Again, thanks a lot for the information!

they might be right in that the piece only comes with the switches attached. When I wanted just the soft plastic trim replaced, my invoice showed that the entire combo was changed. That is a weird response from BMWNA, they are there to take your complaint, then help facilitate a solution...not refer you back to the same dealer...call them again and speak to another rep

I actually replied back to BMWNA and told them to explain why some dealers replace those panels under warranty and some don't.
The rep replied that she would be glad to present my case and see if goodwill assistance might be available for this repair. She took all the info down, so now I ma just waiting for her reply.
I will let you know how it went.

Thanks!

Note the climate difference between the two posters...

Really spooky...... Just a few hours ago, I noticed for the first time that the matt/rubber paint on my sports steering wheel is just starting to lift in one corner. Had no idea this was a common problem, then lo and behold, I come across this thread!

My car's only 6 months old, and the UK climate is not that hot...??!!?? Perhaps its not related to weather then.

Might try my luck at the dealers next time it's in for something.

My car is an '06 push button start model. The black plastic on the lower half of the sport steering wheel has just started to peel .

Apparently there's a Piano Black insert available so I can feel a plan starting to come together

I'd love to know more about this piano black trim for the steering wheel. Please could you post some info when you find out the details?

Thanks!

i dont think climate really matters. it peels on MANY late model BMWs. i think BMWNA will take care of you...and you should never have had to get them involved.. your dealers SA is a turd

Same problem with my car (last car had same problem). I was yesterday at dealer and he ordered new parts, under warranty.
