Default peeling paint on side mirror

I am sure I am not the only e60 owner with peeling paint on my side mirror, so I would really appreciate any first hand experience with solving this problem! I have removed the drivers side mirror and I want to strip the old finish and paint it myself. As seen in these pictures, I am trying to figure out if the mirror is able to be disassembled where the two pieces are connected that swivels. Is this something that can be taken apart and then be reassembled or is this a non-servicable part??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance, Chris

Is the black base peeling? It's hard to tell from the picture. What about the car color portion is it also peeling? Be careful with removing the old paint that's peeling. I couldn't tell if that is an aluminum or plastic base. If you decide to use a chemical to remove the paint be careful as this can sometimes have a bad effect on the substrate in a bad way.

The black finish on the aluminum is the only problem, it is just flaking off! I just want to separate the two pieces where the swivel joint attaches them together so I can get new paint on the aluminum part, as the other black piece is actually a black plastic cover.

This is a problem that is plaguing my car too!
I will take it to a body shop to get it repaired. It looks soooo ugly doesn't it?
