PDC Failure

ouch. sorry to hear about your car...
Theres a PDC sensor right next to where she hit the pole - had she been backing up slowly, i dont see any reason for which the PDC would have missed it. The sensors have really wide-angle range.
As for the reliability, i have gotten "ghost" readings - the occasional beep when theres nothing there - but whilst packing, or indeed any slow maneuver, it has never "not beeped".
Honestly, ive bumped into all sorts of things before, and thats no parking dammage. I say she was hauling ass (possibly into the parking spot).
Or the PDC failed.

My experience is perhaps too sensitive, but not the no alert when there should have been. Low items may be missed but not something that high as evidenced in the damage you show. Sorry for the hit man.
I still look and look and look as I simply cannot let myself be led by this PDC thingy.

My wife hit a pillar whilst reversing the other day. She says that the pdc failed. I find it hard to believe. I've searched the forum and whilst I've spotted a couple of pdc problems, there haven't been many. Is she fibbing or is this a real problem. If so, what will the dealers attitude be (or insurance company's) when I go to get the damage fixed?
Can I ask this to be fixed on warranty or will they just say she should not rely on PDC?

Sorry to hear about the damage. The extend of the impact is hughe and I bet she wasn't going 3 or 4 mph when she hit the pole. This damage occurs when going at least 15 mph.

I've noticed that the PDC won't come on automatically if I'm outside the main iDrive menu, i.e. displaying a list of radio stations. Is this right?

Dees anyone know why that metal bar behind the bumper stops a couple of inches short of the edge?
Ahh, the problem was that I wasn't in reverse... I rarely reverse into parking spaces, I always pull forward. I'll have to be careful to press the PDC button.
I wish they would let us program a button on the steering wheel to turn it on for just this reason. I nose into a space at work with a big pole at the end. I always reach down to turn it on. With perspective NAV I now have a soft button to mute and turn on NAV instructions so I would happily give up one button to turn on the PDC monitor. Are you reading this BMW?
