Passenger Restraint Malfunction
So i went to pick up a friend the moment he sat down a warning message comes on saying, "passenger restraint malfunction, please continue to put on seat belt" ... so basically on my dash board , the air bag icon is lit up and so is the seat belt icon.... what is with THIS..... im think about taking it to the dealer and fix it but i don't know what to do about it.. any help is appreciated. Thank you all
Most likely a seat mat sensor gone bad...very common problem for the e60's. But some people have been lucky to get away with this as a result of a faulty battery cable. Either way, dealer needs to reset the code..

Not if you have a warranty, dealer clears the code for free. If your car is subject to the recall, then the dealer has to fix the problem for free. Either way it's a cheap fix, just hope it's not something more serious. I got the same message, then found out I needed a new CCC unit - a $2000 repair NOT covered under warranty.

If I remember right, there was a recall on this in the US. 2004-6 5 series. Campaign No. 08V-384..I have the letter right here (still haven't gone)

They changed my seat mat sensor 4 months ago and about a month ago the light came on again (4th time in a year) and the dealer replaced the battery cable. I believe the recall covers all passenger restraint related issues regardless of direct cause (seat mat, cable, etc.)...
Haven't paid a penny all 4 times and the car is not under warranty.
