Last night I was out and noticed that the passenger airbag light was on while I had a passenger in the seat next to me, then suddenly the light went out. Has anybody else had the same problem? I'm also curious, can the passenger airbag be turned off and is their a way to turn off the passenger airbag light when driving alone at night? I find it distracting.

how heavy is the passenger? it has a weight sensor and if the passenger is not heavy enough, it'll trigger the light. but if the passenger's weight is around that border line, if you make a sharp turn, and if the passenger's butt lift up a little, the light will come on. should be off again when the passenger's position is back to normal. it's a known issue. i asked my dealer what if the passenger is a adult but very slim. and if i got into an accident, the passenger's airbag doesn't pop. they'll face a ugly lawsuit. my previous service advisor told me bmw is looking into it. but i don't think they'll do anything . btw, you can't turn off the light. i first felt it's distracting but get used to it after a few days. i don't even notice it right now.

Thanks you for your reply, the passenger was my Father in Law he's about 6'3" and ways 190lbs. I even asked him to slide around on the seat but nothing happened. I'm guessing the senser must be defective.

Do a search using passenger airbag or something similar.

I remember many issues regarding this "feature."

the light was off after couple seconds or so, right? if so, sad to say but i bet your dealer won't be able to detect anything . my dealer couldn't detect anything. well, my dealer couldn't do much anyway .

How heavy does the passenger need to be to trigger the sensor?? I remmber sitting in a Scion xB and I tried that sensor out... Lifting my self up with the side of the seat and BARELY touching the seat and that was enough weight to turn that warning off.

You mean you cant even turn it off with out a passenger in the seat?? Ie... shouldnt it be linked to the seat belt or something so if theres no weight on the seat and no seat belt it should turn off the light. BUT if either theres weight on the seat or if the seat belt is buckled the air bag should fire off.

we are talking about the light right above the rearview mirror. that light is on when there is no passenger and no way you can turn it off. the airbag won't pop if there is an accident.

It troubles me to see this problem. I 'Lemon Lawed' my infiniti QX56 because of this very same reason.

Check out this link for my complete details as to how Infiniti refused to do anything to resolve it. I will be pretty pissed off to go through this again:
