Thanks. Ill look into the 3M product. Some E39 guys swear by it. (my former bmw family)
I also highly recommend getting a clear bra. I got my car in July 2008 and thanks to the clear bra, the car's front is chip free. I have one of two chips way higher on the hood but the front looks great. By comparison, my g/f has a 2008 Mercedes E350 that had the front bumper repainted in December of 2008. The front is totally pitted. The other bonus of having the clear bra is that the headlights get protected so no hazing or anything. My bra cost about $600 for the package which consists of the front, the mirrors, two strip by the rear fender wheel and a strip by the trunk.

My Ride: 2004 BMW E60 530i, upgrades: Magnaflow exhaust, Mtec angel eyes and low beam head lights, Just purchased 172 style wheels, looking around for the best tires on Tire Rack now. R1 concepts rotors drilled/slotted. Saving for the M-style kit from Trinity Auto.
My E60 has a lot of hood chips as well, going to the auto body shop soon, my shop quoted me $800 to have it stripped and repainted

Chipping also seems time dependent as it seems to accelerate as time goes on. Suspect the clear coat gets more brittle and rips the paint out.
The most annoying thing is surface rust that needs clay bar treatments on a regular basis. Rear deck (truck) is the problem area.

It will trap moisture if you do not let your paint cure for at least 30 days. If installed properly it should have no issues. If you can have them paint it and let it sit out in the sun for a month and then install a clear bra. Also make sure you have a quality installer do the work. I had a custom one installed by a highly rated company and the only seam you see is the one around the head lights. They wrapped and tucked in all seams and you can't tell it's on my car unless you really look. Be sure to use dye free waxes/sealers and spray retailers to prevent yellowing.
