What product(s) work best to repair a paint chip in my new Carbon Black 550 Sport? The silver metal is now exposed. I want to to fix this ASAP. I am thinking about using BMW touch up paint and applying it with a toothpick.

thats a good way to do it. put a dab of clear on it, then wet sand and polish if you want it to be nearly good as new. itll never be perfect but this is pretty close. if you dont want to bother, just fill it with touchup paint, and move on. your bound to get more, unfrotunately

that?s how Al, proprietor of Small Cars (considered until it closed the finest bmw only body and paint shop in the NE), told me how to do touch ups.

I know there are companies that specialize in chip repair (might be the same guys that do the paintless dent removal stuff) but if you decide to do it yourself, take a look at this:

I tried this kit on my 04 545 e60. It was silver metallic and I did not get good results. Possibly because the silver metallic is very unforgiving.

If you picked this one up from Motorwerks, call Bob Paduch and he can have it air brushed. Any dealer probably has a source for this, but I know you have worked with Bob in the past. However, this process does not completly fill in the chip and make it level with the surrounding OEM paint. The OEM paint will be higher. The air brushing will just cover the primer/bare metal. I have had this done there a few times. It is far better than doing it yourself with touch up paint.

I've used this method on my T/S X5 with very good results . I think it is important to know that it will never be perfect but it is very good option. I took my first bumper chip on the X5 to a body shop and while they did a good job the method you show here, done at home ,had the same result.
Cheers

Fine idea. Motor Werks uses The Body Shop of Barrington, which is an absolutely superb BMW certified body shop. They have done work for me in the past generally repairing and painting bumpers. I'll call Paul the owner on Monday. I'll see what he says.
