I have one of the first 535d's to arrive in the UK ( Nov 04 ) and upon arriving home last night, got out of the car to smell either very hot plastics or metal coming from under the bonnet. The wife thought it was going to catch fire as the smell filled the house !

There was an uncharacteristic 'whooshing noise' preceeding this too.

Suspect the turbo's, anyone had any experience of blown turbos on these motors or anything similar to what I have experienced ?
Slightly different question - do you 'cool' your turbo's before turning the car off? I assume this still applies to turbo-diesels... The dealer for my previous turbo petrol advised 'cooling the turbo' by idling the engine for a minute or two - known as simmering I believe. It's something to do with hot oil setting inside the turbo and causing damage?

Hope it's not the turbo.

The regular cleaning of the diesel filter?

JBOO,

I too have had this twice. Car has done 5500 miles approx.

No smoke, no loss of performance and no other sign of a malady other than the smell and funny noise.

Booked into the Dealer to investigate.

Update when available

Always let the turbos spin down, not for that long though, 10-20 seconds with vehicle stationary usually but a bit longer if I think Ive been caning it.

May be it is stupid but could it be related to the paricles filter burning process?

Yves, you're probably thinking that the "reply" button is at the top right corner of a post. Actually, the reply button you need to press is at the bottom right so what you did was reply to the post above the one you intended.

Make sense? Welcome! You'll figure things out in no time...
