I'm in the process of getting into an 08 535 but I haven't found the exact color with the specific options and accessories I'd like. I was reading on this board on how many of you guys were able to order your car according to your own specifications. I am aware this process can take between 6-8 weeks. How can I order mine---is it best to go thru the dealership or the BMW FS directly. Also, is there room for negotiation when you preorder the vehicle.

I'm currently leasing an 05 530 and the lease is up in December, however, I just hit the 36k mile mark and I dread each time I take a look at that odometer. I'm wondering if I should trade it in now to avoid further milage accrual charges, purchase them right now at the discounted rate (16% I believe) or wait until Dec and hopefully negotiate to have the extra mileage charges (I'm guessing I'm going over about 5k miles= $1,000) written off since I'm not going over that much. I previously leased a 3 series and went over about 3,000 miles and the dealership wrote them off. Is this something they tend to do if you plan on releasing another bimmer--or was that just a lucky shot?

Any advice is well appreciated.

You cannot order directly from BMWFS. You'll have to order from a dealership. If I were you I'd go ahead and buy the extra mileage. That way you're not hit with the .20/mile overage at lease end. I think you have 6 months prior to lease end to buy the discounted mileage. You may want to buy the miles now.

If you really want to save, try the European Delivery option as mentioned on the board (use search function).

Do you really save? Or get a contribution to a nice holiday with the difference?

Depends upon how you do it. Usually, there is a least a $3500 difference between what you pay for US delivery and what you pay for ED. Doing it to save money, you get the best airfare going over a weekend, so expect about $650 in airfare. Assume you fly out on Wednesday, arrive Thursday, pick up the car Friday and fly back on Monday, you are faced with 4 nights lodging at about $100 per, and 4 days expenses at about $50 per, and add in a tank of gas at about $100, and add in $150 for cabs. (These are all estimates, but doable if you dont go during high season. You could even get by with less.) That totals $1500. One person can reasonably go over there, stay a few days, get the car, drive it around and fly back and still pocket $2000. If you take your loving significant other, add a few days, you should probably figure on double that. However, that brings it to about an 8-10 day trip to Europe for basically free.

Downside: Much longer wait for it all to get done. If you lease, you lose a month or two on the up-front start and on the re-delivery. Next to impossible to trade in your current car. More hassle with ED compared to regular US delivery. More time away from work.

Do a search but I think you save enough to pay for a nice week with some left over. Bimmerfest has a lot of info on it.

With options, the ED invoice will be over $4K less than the U.S. price and you only need to pay an ED dealer about $1-1.5K over invoice (likely more for U.S. dealer) so you save about $5K.
