Sorry if this is a silly question guys, but I am used to having a temperature guage on my car, (so I know when it's okay to start thrashing it a bit!).
But where on the E60 is this ?
Cheers.
(BTW - note my car is a 525d UK model).

Temperature gauges give you coolant temperature.? If you wanted a good gauge of when it's safer to "thrash" it, you'd want to be looking at an oil temperature gauge I believe.

IIRC the rev counter gives the indication ie.
------ snip -----
The white-striped advance warning field,
arrow 1, changes depending on the engine
temperature. The segments disappear in
sequence as the engine warms to its normal
operating temperature.
Avoid allowing the engine speed to rise as
far as the advance warning field whenever
possible.

The rev counter markings IMHO are a waste of time. They go down to the lowest level much too early to be used as a guide for thrashing the engine. The oil temperature is still way too cold.
In my old M3 that came with an oil temp guage it took at least 30 minutes of stop start driving before the temp. was high enough to start thrashing and that was in summer.

I agree with streak. The variable "white line" isn't a direct indication of coolant temp, oil temp, or anything else. Many people seem to think this is a valid substitute for the lack of a coolant temp gauge but I feel that's a mistake.
BMW really needs to give us a "vital statistics" page on iDrive so we can see virtual gauges on any/all critical functions. How hard could that be to implement? It could be in the settings menu -- and it wouldn't conflict with BMW Assist, BT, MP3, Sirius, etc.

Just pound it when the white rev counter markings are gone BMW's own damn fault for not putting a proper oil temp gauge!!.. and don't keep your car for too long
