My dealer charges $120 for an "interim oil change", and $250 for an "oil service". The service writer could not explain the difference between the two, except that the idrive is reset with an oil service, and they check the lights. An oil service for $250 seems to be very steep; for that price I will do it myself!

Does anybody know what else the dealer is supposed to do at the regular "oil service" interval.

Bill

Drain old oil and replace with new oil.
Replace the oil filter
Reset iDrive

I have no idea what else would constitute an oil service

Sounds about right Bill; just had a change on my 550 and paid $155 for the oil change and $80 to reset the CBS display. I got a full vacuum & wash included in that too. Don't know if they did anythng else.

Cool.

I paid $65 for 7 quarts of BMW oil from my dealer plus $8 for the filter/ring. I then paid $10 to Midas to drain the oil, pour in the new oil and replace the filter. Oh yea, they vacuumed and wiped my windows down, too.

Seems I saved over $70 or so by not going to the dealer.

At my dealer, oil change means oil change only. Nothing else. However, with oil service, they do a mini visual check ups, top off fluids, check for leaks etc and
adjust parking brake(if you have MT/SMG you will benefit of this service the most). And I believe just oil change runs around $125 vs oil service is around $250.

That's crazy. You can get a tool from Bavarian Auto that will pay for itself after one of the dealership's services to reset the iDrive. Paying $250 for an oil "service" is rediculous. If you have reasons you'd like them to inspect your car, I can justify. But if your only intention is to get an oil change and reset the iDrive....

Before the days of CBS (Condition Based Service) there were several types of maintenance done based on miles, time, and driving conditions. They included "oil service", Inspection I / II etc.

Each consisted of specific fluid and filter changes, adjustments, and examinations. In my mind, an oil change is just that ... Drain old oil, replace oil filter and o-rings, refill with fresh oil.

But you don't need a tool to reset the oil service light!!!
Correction,you need a finger.

Exactly - and I can do it 2 minutes....why is this an extra $100 charge!

If nothing else BMW service writers need an education on how to sell this service...I mean the correct answer would be to why there is an extra charge is that they do an thorough inspection at an "oil service".

Usually Oil Service includes a loaner, while Oil Change does not.
