Why does my car consistently give me this error every few months way before my oil needs to be changed again.

Ive checked and there is no oil leak problem and a friend who drives a same year 5 series as I do get this once in a while as well
is this a factory problem?
I always get nervous and go buy a liter to put back to normal.

faulty oil level sensor? Is there a dipstick on your car? probably want to verify if the oil level is in fact low!

Mine does the same and the previous one too (2008 & 2010 535's) if I wait until the service is due the light is sure to notify me to add one quart. I think a lot of people do a mid term oil change and this should eliminate this error. If you are getting it on during a mid oil change meaning well before your service is due, there could be something wrong.

Well, you need to add 1 qt/liter oil. I just changed my oil in my 535i and it showed max after about 7 thousand miles. Just for curiosity I put 6 quarts in and it showed minimum but after adding the extra quart it went up to max. (I guess the sensor works in mine.) BTW I measured the used oil and it was just a little shy of 7 quarts. Cheers

I had a 2008 335i for 2 years and now have a 2009 535i for almost a year and so far I needed to add ZERO oil! The level always stayed at the max level. Both had N54 engines. I am lucky I guess! :-)))

IMHO engine break-in is a very important factor in ensuring that rings and valve seating/wear contributes to engine longevity. Lots written (maybe on on this forum) about the topic.
Again, IMHO if you are adding oil to a 2011X5 every 1500-2000 miles there's an engine problem; In my opinion, THAT is excessive consumption.

-1 NO BMW I've owned consumed oil between changes. And I've driven 3 of them well over 100K miles. I've not been one of those guys who changed the oil every 3k miles either. On my first BMW - a 1986 524TD - I changed according to the green-yellow-red bar 'computer' and the oil change notice. Based on my driving style (if I recall) that meant about every 6K miles or so. Same with my 740's.

And to your response about my 2011 x5. You really do not know what you are talking about. BMW has officially stated that oil consumption at a rate of 1qt every 750 to 3000 miles is normal on the 4.4tt motor. This was revised down from the 1500-3000 originally stated. I am friends with my SA and he tells me that almost EVERY 550, 750, X55.0 and X5m x65.0'and X6m that he has as a client needs oil on average of 3000 and some cars he is seeing every 1000. I guess BMW has produced a ton of engines with problems.

I have the same car as you and I don't have this problem. About 8.5K miles after an oil change and the oil level indicator is still pretty high. What kind of oil do you use? I would have the sensors or engine checked.
