oil pressure..water temp?

My Ride: 2005 545i Sport 6 speed Manual
how is is possible that a $60K car does not have a gauge for oil pressure and water temp? i thought the idiot lights went obsolete with american cars from the early 80s.
can these values be monitored with the I-drive...am i missing something? new BMW owner here.

that's exactly why you don't need them, it's a $60k car 
in all seriousness, i wondered the same thing myself, i like to have as much data as possible, but i'm guessing 80% of the people who buy these cars don't even know what they mean.

It is rinky-dink, hard to see, I don't like it, but it is there.
If you really have to have numbers, search the archives. There is a way to get into the diagnostic display (between the speedo and tach) and you can select just about anything you want and get real number readouts. Only one thing at a time tho.
