I actually never needed to add oil to my car for the first 2 years... just during this past year I had to add 3/4 quart into it. It was like a month away from an oil change but I didnt want to run it with not enough oil so I added it and then a month later I got an oil change... I'll have to monitor it now and see if I'll need to add any oil this coming year.

That kind of consumption is abnormal. I have put 16k miles on my car in 8 months and I have never had to top off the oil. It just had its first oil change.

I have a 520i also and after 10.000km I had to add 1,3 L of oil or so. My car has 110.000km. Is this normal? I am begining to worry...
It is normal, don't worry. However if you needed to add more than 1L then you probably should have added it earlier...

You have to drive the car worm the first 8miles. No full throttle, gear change at 3000rpm. I hope you do that because if you do that on a cold engine the engine will die faster than when you drive it worm.

But you allready know that I think.

There are more people here with oil problems so you`re not alone.

Sorry if my English sucks.

Lawguy, Don't be concerned. It happens to some of our cars. Like stated above, after the first oil change it should rectify itself.
on the contrary - after my first oil change my engine started to ask for 1L of oif every 2000 km. Before the oil change I only added first liter of oil after 11000 km.

dealer have added last liter of oil himself and asked to come when the warning sign will come back again. 1000 km passed and 2 green scale units gone... two more to go before the 'add oil' message appears again ....

My oil warning light came on yesterday, said I was down 1 quart. I'm at 14 months of ownership on a new 530 with only 8500 miles and had not done the first oil change yet. The dealer offered to do a warranty oil change based on time and not mileage so I had them do it. I'll monitor oil but I didn't think that being down one quart after 14 months was that big of deal. I do miss having a dip stick though, part of me wanted to just pop the hood and check the level myself after I got the IDrive warning.

I don't know your particular circumstances, but one explanation could be from hard driving (not necessaryily fast driving).

When you hit high rev's, you creat a lot of pressure in the the engine. When you back off quickly (like changing gears our downshifting), it can literally suck oil past the rings and/or valve stem seals. This is particularly noticable in a new engine that's not completely broken in.

You may have a frozen oil ring; one that's not seating, or bad stem seal(s).

If may want to visit a local mechanic who specializes in BMWs and ask their advice on your particular engine. The ones around here seem to offer it (if you don't take all their time).

Our 2005 530i used a quart in the first 5K, but little after that. My 2003 Z4 doesn't use it unless it been an enjoyable ride (although it's not alot). I made sure when I broke the Z4 in, that I went through the entire RPM range working myself up and down slowly and over time (to the upper limits).

Good luck.

2003 Z4 (mine)
2004 530i (previous -wifes with a story)
2001 530i (previous mine)
1985 325i (hoopty - back up car on previous tour in Germany)

No dip stick?

Are you sure? All my BMW's have had one. Is this new for 2007?

I havent been on the site for awhile and was surprised to see this thread still going. Lots of differing opinions and interesting thoughts, for sure.

The car had its first oil change at 11,600 miles, at which time the car said it was ready for service. (Amusingly, I got a call from my SA, who said the car notified them. VERY Big Brother like...wonder what else the car knows about me...lol). I do drive the car very agressively, but always within reason, if that makes any sense. I dont spin wheels or shit like that, just higher RPM shifts. Interestingly, it still ticks loudly after 12k miles when I shut it off.

Anyhow, they arent worried about it, and since I'll undboutedly let it go before the warranty runs, I'm not going to worry about it either - I'm just going to enjoy the hell out of the car, as it was created to give great pleasure.
