My oil light warning came on today - its the 2nd time the car has been low on oil in its first 6400 miles. I do drive agressively and whatnot, but this seems a little odd to me. I stopped by the dealer today and they added another quart or so, and didnt seem too concerned.

Anything think this is a little more concerning? This makes 2 times they've added since I got the car...

No worries lawguy,

I might have put at least 2 or 3 quarts of oil before even getting my first oil change. I called the dealer to ask if it was a faulty sensor and he said no, your engine just loves oil.

In Topic: Oil Level Sensor?
I have had this same problem since about 2000 miles. The Dealer has (1 & 2) drained the oil and found it had the correct amount, (3)changed the sensor, and recently (4) removed the sensor cleaned it and reinstalled it. These 4 trips to the dealer has not corrected the problem. I have 7000 miles on this car and I suspect the problem will come back in a month or so. I'm considering what my alternatives are if this happens again. This car should have been fixed by now. I don't like to take this car on trips of 100 miles or more because of this problem. Question: Has anyone gone past where I am with the Dealer and what can I expect?

Thanks for thoughts. It seems very odd to me, but knowing others have seen similar things is somewhat reassuring.

Thx.

I didn't realise that an engine's love affair with heavy oil consumption was a healthy indicator.

I didn't used to be like this.

Non of my M54 L6 engines ever needed any extra oil.

I've done nearly 18,000 miles and iDrive indicates 2,500 miles to go before someone has to lift the bonnet/hood.

Lawguy, Don't be concerned. It happens to some of our cars. Like stated above, after the first oil change it should rectify itself.

Same problem here also with a 520i, with 16.600 km.
I have already added 2 liters of oil and the warning (add another litter asap) come on again yesterday.
It doesn't look good to me. How in the world a brand new car could "drink" 3 liters of oil ?
Is there any official response from BMW?
I will check with one of the most trustworthy dealers in my country (Greece) and let you know.

Why not have the oil changed now? Yes, you will pay for the service, but then you can better monitor oil usage. I had mine changed just after break-in and every 7,500 miles since.

I had the opposite problem with the oil sensor - it always read too much oil. But after v25 it has been reading correctly.
