I've been having the same issue with my oil level sensor. it is very erratic. one day it shows me that it is low, and the next that it is full. I havent been able to figure out any trends (engine temp?). I think it's time to replace the sensor!

Dealer said sensor was fine. Not sure how he checked this though. Had oil change and it reads with all five green bars. I did read somewhere else that said if the oil has some miles on it, it may start to read erratically. something to do with the quality of oil wearing down and altering the sensor... Not sure if this is idle chat.
Oil change seems to have cured it for now. Will keep my eyes on level as miles are accumulated for bad readings.

I was thinking that too. I guess I have dipstick-envy, my 07 530 N52 is lacking.
The oil level sender just bolts on to the bottom of the oil pan, just an electrical connector, looks like a possible DIY job or basic (cheaper than dealer) mechanic's job. Part is $94 at partsgeek.com.
I might try to cleaning mine first, soaking it in chemtool brand fluid, then spraying it with carburetor cleaner. Might just be gunk problem, buildup of junk.
