Default Oil leak ughh

Need some input from everyone, over the weekend I worked on my car did following work.
1) rear rotor and pads
2) o2 sensor
3) transmission fluid
4) oil change

This morning while driving from stamford to fairfield I started smelling awkward smell so parked my car on the side and all the sudden smoke starts coming out from the car.

It was an oil leak......not sure how to add picture from my ipad but oil is everywhere on the engine cover.

The smoke was coming from oil dripping down to hot part of the engine I guess........

Good thing I signed up for AAA two weeks ago so at least I get free towing for 3 miles to office.

What do you think the problem is it possible that I put too much oil? I put 6.5 quarts.

Thank you

How about did you put the oil cap back on? It is likely you had an oil leak around the valve cover gaskets before you changed the oil. This has happened to me way back when I had my e39 528. About a 1.5 hour job to change and set you back about 50 bucks for kits. Check/replace the sensor o-rings while you are at it. Good Luck.

That's what I figured, I'll probably be replacing the oil cap first to see if that will solve the problem.

Before replacing parts, you'll need to identify the 'source' of the oil leak. It's possible, the oil cap or the oil filter cap wasn't tightened. Check those 2 first. Tighten them, if necessary. Then clean up the entire area. Start the engine will hood open and see if the oil leak continues...

Like pcy said, it could be the oil cap. However, what could also be the case is that you didn't tighten the oil filter properly. Did you use a new gasket when replacing the oil filter, etc? It sounds like a missed step that caused this to happen considering it was right after you performed maintenance on the car. Unlikely that something so severe would happen otherwise.

Actually, I did replace the o-ring in the oil filter cap (2 of them smaller one and the big one) and I just bought another one to replace it again, but now I'm getting more oil leak. And I did tighten it pretty well.

Once I took the o-ring out there were two section that was making wide "v" possibly causing the problem. After replacing the o-ring again it was doing the same thing.

However this time I'm getting more leak, but oil spitting out in the different direction. So I know the problem is the oil filter cap.......

I just placed an order of the whole new oil filter cap at the BMW dealer and wishing that is the problem.

If that is not the problem I have to send it to bring it to the shop.......Is there anything else that I should check before sending it to shop?

I was getting lots of oil right around the circled section.

Apologize posting but I may have solved my problem.

I had the o-ring all the way at the end of the oil filter cap, just moved it one below and now I believe I have fixed the problem.

I have to go clean my engine because of my stupidity.

There is a 'groove' in the oil filter cap for that large o-ring. You may have not put the o-ring in that groove - causing that huge leak.
It's good that you figured out the cause of the leak. We all make mistakes and learn [from those mistakes].
