My Ride: 2005 545i Sport 6 speed Manual
i have a cpo 545i sport with 37k miles, bought it with 34k. as far as i know the only oil it has seen is bmw syn 5w-30 since all changed were done by the dealer.
soon it will be time for the 1st oil change with me as its owner. been reading about which oil to use here and other places. i went to mobil's website they say use 0w-40. for experiments sake i entered an 07 m5 as my car, mobile says 10w-60. (didn't even know they made a 15w-60)
i am suspicious of these new super thin energy conserving oils. i think that a lot of manufacturers spec that oil for fuel economy reasons at the expense of engine wear.
i've only used mobil syn 15-50 in my wife's A8, it has 120k on it now, still smooth and quiet, and burns none. i only use mobil syn 15-50 in my z32 twin turbo, it has 140k on the original engine and turbos, and still totally perfect. the cam lobes are still flawless.
does anyone think i'll ruin my 545i engine if i go with mobil 10-30 or 15-50? some would say that the bmw engine has such tight clearances that you must use a very low viscosity oil. i would have a hard time believing that the bmr engine is any more clearance critical than an audi 4.2.
if the 0wt is good for a 545i then why not for an m5. seems to me that if 10w-60 works in a bmw v10 then why not in a v8. the engines must have a lot of similarities.
a lot of my fears are centered around the valvtronic parts. i'm worried that one day i'll hear the dreaded clicking noise, and was thinking that 15w-50 oil might prevent failure.
hence i'm in oil hell!!!
opinions would be much appreciated.
