I'm about to do my first oil change on my 06 530i.
When I look up the filter on-line the listings always show 2 filters - one with a heat exchanger and one without. Can anybody offer some info as to which one I need. I'd rather pick up the filter in the aftermarket than the dealer.
Cheers, Scottie

I have a 2008 528xi.
The filter is on the top/front of the engine.
Although I have not changed the oil yet, it looks like the MANN filter that was in my Volvo. It was a cartridge insert, not a throw away "spinoff" can.
You reuse the plastic outside shell and toss the pleated insert. I think it is a pollution thing.
Some companies listed the Volvo as having a spinoff - but they were wrong. Also I think that the heat exchanger may be for a replacement outer shell which may be for racing etc. Sounds like a great idea for severe use.
SO my advice is that you go to your local foreign car parts store and get the right one. That will get you ready for future changes. BTW I always got the Volvo one at the local store and it was ~$5US.
You will get a lot of help and you dont pay for shipping.

Thanks. This clears up the mystery. Now I just need to find out why Partsource wants $24 for this and $8 for the other one when you do a search.
