I think we talk about that long time ago.

But guess what? I am still more concern with my heater steering wheel:

Each money i need to do the chicken dance to activate it and then i need
to do the chicken dance again to see if it is active!

1) the button is in a crypty position. I can not never get to it without
turn my head and my steering wheel at the sametime.

2) then, there is no way you can find out if activated unless the steering wheel
gets warmed right away or you turn your steeering wheel and do the chicken dance again moving your head to see it!

2 cents

When you first start the car, depending on the temperature of the engine, the tachometer will show a variable band of white lines approaching the red-line indicator. The number of lines are variable and will get smaller as the engine warms up to normal operating temperature. These lines are basically a moving warning band to indicate that the motor should not be revved past the lines if possible. On the 545i, when 4 lines remain, the car is up to temperature.

During warm up the the car(at least a steptronic) will not rev beyond the first white line.

I wasn't aware of that. I thought there was no tie between the variable white lines and the electronic rev limiter (at red-line.) Maybe the steptronic's shift points are tied to it?

How long have you had your car? I agree that I used to have trouble finding the button but now that I use it regularly, I locate it easily without looking. It has a definite click when activated so I know it's on and I don't bother with the visual confirmation which, as you state, is difficult.

One thing I learned from driving the M3 with an oil temp guage is that it takes LONG after the RPM warm up lights extinguish for the oil temps to get up to operating temp. I think the RPM lights are based on coolant temps. So, for engine longevity, take it easy on the revs for several miles past when the tach indicates the engine is warm.

There is a hidden cluster (not I Drive) menu that will give you the core temperature. It's however not that user friendly and there is an unlock sequence that you have to go through each time you start the car before you can view this hidden menu.

I just traded my 95 525i for a 05 530i. Love the car but miss the coolant temp and engine oil pressure gages. Please reply with instructions on how to access the hidden cluster menu that will give the core temperature, etc.

Welcome aboard, jimc !

You really don't 'need' a temp gauge. AFAIK you'd have to get into the hidden menue everytime you want to see it, so it's waaaay too much of a hassle.
You get a warning when the engine overheats, and you can see if it's warmed up all the way by the white lines around the RPM gauge. They move back when the engine warms up. Once it's warm you only see two or three white lines left.

It would be great if BMW would add a "vital statistics" screen within iDrive somewhere.? How difficult can it be?? All of the statistics are already being monitored with various sensors, etc.?

Just give us a screen of virtual gauges that would include coolant temp, oil temp, oil pressure, battery voltage, etc.? (Remember, the variable white lines on the tach are not a temperature gauge as many people believe...)? Also, why do we even have the silly instant MPG vacuum gauge?? This isn't 1970 anymore.? What a useless thing that is!? I can't believe they're putting that on these cars!!

Please BMW, why not add this to the software?? I doubt it would introduce any bugs, etc. since it's more or less a "read only" informational screen.

Concur! You are absolutely right Rudy.
